If you have a German Shepherd you already know — the shedding is real. Now imagine two German Shepherds, a baby who crawls on the floor and shedding season hitting at full force in April. That is my life and honestly I would not change it for anything.

The name of our page — Júpiter & Pluto Chaos — exists partly because of the beautiful chaos these two create with their fur. Here is everything I do to manage it.

When do German Shepherds shed the most?

German Shepherds shed year round but they have two major shedding seasons — spring and fall. In spring they lose their winter coat and in fall they prepare for the colder months. During these periods the amount of hair is absolutely overwhelming — especially with two large dogs.

In our case April is the worst month. I had our baby in April right in the middle of peak shedding season. The timing was truly chaos but we survived 😂

What I did to prepare

A few months before the baby arrived and before shedding season hit, I invested in a good vacuum cleaner specifically designed for pet hair. This was one of the best decisions I ever made. With two German Shepherds you need a vacuum that can actually handle large amounts of fur — a regular vacuum simply will not cut it.

🐾 Our biggest tip

Invest in a good pet hair vacuum before shedding season starts. It will save your sanity. Look for one specifically designed for pet hair with strong suction and easy-to-clean filters.

Our brushing routine during shedding season

During shedding season we brush Júpiter and Pluto every single day — sometimes twice a day. The more you brush, the less hair ends up on your furniture, floors and clothes. Brushing outside when possible is even better so the loose hair does not stay in the house.

Regular brushing also:

The truth — you will never eliminate dog hair completely

I have accepted something important — no matter how much I vacuum and brush, there will always be dog hair in my home. It is part of life with German Shepherds. Dog hair is the essence of our home and honestly it makes me smile because it means my boys are here with us.

My baby crawls around and picks up the occasional dog hair. He is growing up surrounded by Júpiter and Pluto and I think that is beautiful. A little dog hair never hurt anyone. And honestly — with two large German Shepherds in the house, my husband and I have definitely swallowed the occasional dog hair ourselves without even noticing. That is just life now and we have fully accepted it. 😂

The vacuum that actually works — Dyson v10

Before I had this vacuum I was fighting a losing battle. Regular vacuums simply cannot handle the volume of fur that two German Shepherds produce — especially during shedding season. The filter would clog, the suction would drop and I would end up pushing the hair around instead of picking it up.

The Dyson v10 changed everything for me. It picks up every single hair, the suction stays strong even with heavy use and it is easy to clean the filter. I run it every morning right after I get up — before the baby goes on the floor for playtime. If I miss even one morning the difference is noticeable.

If you have large dogs that shed, a good vacuum is not optional — it is essential. You can find it in our products section too.

🐾 Our vacuum routine

Every morning before the baby hits the floor — vacuum. This one habit keeps the floor clean enough for crawling time. During shedding season I sometimes vacuum twice a day. Without a good pet hair vacuum, shedding season with two German Shepherds is genuinely unmanageable.

The baby and the dog hair — real life

My baby crawls near Júpiter and Pluto constantly. Two large dogs that shed means there will always be some hair in the air and on the floor no matter how much I clean. If I vacuum first thing in the morning the floor is clean for a while — but the moment the dogs come in from outside they bring more hair and dirt with them.

Júpiter and Pluto spend a lot of time outside and then come back inside — which means they are constantly tracking in loose fur, dirt and whatever else they found in the yard. Keeping the house at one hundred percent clean is simply not realistic with two German Shepherds and a crawling baby. What I aim for is clean enough — and with the right vacuum and a consistent routine, that is very achievable.

The baby has dog hair on him sometimes. He does not care at all. He is growing up in a house full of love and that love comes with fur. I would not have it any other way.

What helps their coat stay healthy

A healthy coat sheds less and looks better. We give Júpiter and Pluto carrots and vegetables in their food, coconut oil on their coat and use a good quality shampoo when we bathe them. Since we started paying more attention to their diet and grooming routine, their coats have been noticeably healthier and the shedding has been more manageable.
