German Shepherds have a beautiful double coat — but it requires consistent care. After years of grooming Júpiter and Plutón, we have figured out a routine that keeps their coats healthy, shiny and manageable without spending hours every day.
Here is everything we do for their coat care — bathing schedule, dry shampoo, brushing routine and what we feed them for a healthy shiny coat.
How often should you bathe a German Shepherd?
This is one of the most common questions German Shepherd owners ask. The answer — not too often. German Shepherds have a natural oil in their coat that protects their skin. Bathing too frequently strips those oils and can cause dry, irritated skin.
Our bathing schedule for Júpiter and Plutón:
- Full bath every 2 to 3 months
- Dry shampoo bath once a month or when they start to smell
- More frequent baths only during allergy flare-ups
Because we brush them frequently, they stay clean much longer. Regular brushing removes dirt, loose hair and odor — so we don't need to bathe them as often.
Dry shampoo — our secret weapon
With two large dogs and a baby at home, full baths are not always possible. That is where dry shampoo became a game changer for us. We use a coconut oil dry shampoo spray — we apply it directly on their coat and it leaves their fur shiny, soft and smelling amazing. No water, no drama.
It works great between baths and both Júpiter and Plutón tolerate it well. Júpiter accepts it with dignity. Plutón tolerates it if there is a treat involved.
Brushing routine — especially during shedding season
German Shepherds shed a lot — and twice a year during shedding season it gets even more intense. We brush Júpiter and Plutón 1 to 2 times daily during shedding season and less frequently the rest of the year.
Regular brushing:
- Removes loose hair before it ends up on your furniture
- Distributes natural oils through the coat
- Keeps the coat clean between baths
- Is a great bonding moment with your dog
During heavy shedding season, brush outside if possible. The amount of hair that comes off is incredible — you will thank us later.
What we put on their coat
We apply coconut oil on their coat and paws — it adds shine, moisturizes dry skin and is completely safe for dogs. A little goes a long way. We also apply it on their nose which tends to get dry especially in winter.
What we feed them for a healthy coat
A healthy coat starts from the inside. Along with their regular dog food, we give Júpiter and Plutón:
- Carrots and vegetables mixed into their food
- Chicken or other protein additions to their meals
- Peanut butter as a treat — they go crazy for it
- A frozen chicken paw almost daily — it cleans their teeth and they love it
Since we started adding vegetables and good protein to their diet, their coats have been noticeably shinier and healthier.
Best shampoo for German Shepherds
When we do give them a full bath, we use a chlorhexidine shampoo — it is especially good for Júpiter who has skin allergies. It helps with bacteria, soothes irritated skin and leaves their coat clean and fresh.
Bathing them with a baby at home — the honest reality
Before the baby, bathing Júpiter and Pluto was something I could do on my own schedule. Now with an 11-month-old at home, full baths require planning and teamwork. The honest reality is this — I cannot bathe two large German Shepherds and watch a baby at the same time. It is simply not possible.
When the weather is warm we bathe them outside the house. The moment they get into bath mode they get excited and run everywhere — and they get me completely soaked in the process. Drying and brushing two large dogs takes real time and attention. While I am doing that, I cannot have eyes on the baby.
This is where having a good partner makes all the difference. My husband watches the baby while I bathe the dogs, or vice versa. If you have large dogs and a baby at home and you are doing it solo — the dry shampoo routine becomes your best friend. It keeps them clean enough between the full baths that you can space those baths out further without guilt.
You need a second person. Full baths for large German Shepherds take time, get messy and require your full attention. Accept this, plan around it and use dry shampoo to extend the time between baths. A good partner is genuinely indispensable for this.
