Pluto is our youngest German Shepherd — sweet, shy and absolutely obsessed with his ball. A few months ago we noticed something was not right with him. He was spending a lot of time trying to go to the bathroom and sometimes having small accidents inside the house. For a dog that was perfectly house trained, this was a clear sign something was wrong.
Here is our experience with Pluto's urinary issues and what has helped him.
What we noticed first
The signs started gradually. We noticed that Pluto would go outside to use the bathroom and spend much longer than usual trying to urinate. Sometimes he would squat and strain but only a little would come out. Other times he would have small accidents inside — which was very unusual for him.
Signs that your German Shepherd may have urinary issues:
- Straining or taking much longer than usual to urinate
- Frequent small accidents inside the house
- Going outside to pee more often than normal
- Licking the urinary area more than usual
- Seeming uncomfortable or restless
If you notice any of these signs in your dog, visit your vet immediately. Urinary issues can have different causes and only a vet can diagnose the problem correctly. Do not wait — these issues can get worse quickly.
What the vet said
We took Pluto to the vet as soon as we noticed something was wrong. The vet examined him, ran some tests and prescribed medication to help with the issue. We always keep Pluto up to date with his vet visits — we believe preventive care is just as important as treating problems when they appear.
What has helped Pluto daily
In addition to the vet prescribed medication, we started giving Pluto a cranberry supplement for dogs. We found it on Amazon and decided to try it after reading about the benefits of cranberry for urinary health in dogs. Since we started giving it to him as part of his daily routine we have noticed a real improvement — fewer accidents, less straining and he seems much more comfortable.
Our daily routine for Pluto's urinary health
- Cranberry supplement every day mixed into his food
- His prescribed medication at the correct dose every day
- Making sure he has access to fresh water at all times
- Regular bathroom breaks — we do not make him wait too long
- Regular vet checkups to monitor his health
- Keeping an eye on any changes in his bathroom habits
Pay attention to your dog's bathroom routine. You know your dog better than anyone. If something seems off — they are taking longer, going more often or having accidents — do not ignore it. A vet visit early can prevent a bigger problem later.
How I know the medication is working
The clearest way I can tell the medication is doing its job is simple — when I give it to Pluto there are no accidents inside the house. When I miss a dose or run out, he starts leaving drops of urine around. That difference is immediate and obvious. The medication is controlling something that his body is not able to regulate on its own right now.
We are still in the process of figuring out exactly what is happening — the vet asked us to do a urine analysis to get more information. That process is ongoing. For now we manage it with the medication at the correct dose and the daily supplement while we wait for more answers.
The dose matters. We always give exactly what the vet prescribed — not more, not less. Giving the wrong dose of any medication can make things worse or cause other problems. This is not something to guess at. Always follow your vet's specific instructions and call them if something seems off.
Never adjust your dog's medication dose without consulting your vet first. Too little may not work. Too much can cause harm. If you are unsure about the dose or notice anything unusual, call your vet immediately.

Pluto today
Today Pluto is doing much better. He is happy, active and completely back to his ball-obsessed self. We continue giving him the cranberry supplement and his medication daily as part of his routine and keep his vet visits regular. We are still getting answers about exactly what is causing the issue but in the meantime he is comfortable, well-managed and living his best life.
If your dog is going through something similar, please visit your vet first. Every case is different and what worked for Pluto may not be the solution for every dog. But I hope our experience helps you feel less alone in this journey.
